Three Arguments Based

Introduction : An argument is a statement meant to convince another person about your point of view. In these types of questions, your personal biases and opinions or any prior knowledge about the subject matter should never be considered. Here, you are given a statement followed by a set of arguments related to that statement. These arguments may support or contradict the statement. You are expected to assess whether each argument is strong or weak.

Concept of Strong and Weak Arguments : -

Strong Argument An argument is a strong one, if it is directly related to the given statement and the reason given in the argument addresses all the points put forward in the given statement.

Weak Argument An argument is a weak one, if it is not directly related to the given statement and it does not address all the points put forward in the given statement.

Points to keep in mind while solving and practicing these questions.

While you make a decision about the important questions, it is desirable to be able to differentiate between ‘strong’ and ‘weak’ arguments so far as they relate to the questions.

For ‘weak’ arguments, the most important thing to note is that they may or may not be directly related to the question and may be of minor importance.

Then based on the question, you have to determine which argument is strong and which one is weak.

Points taken into consideration while choosing a strong or a weak argument.

Strong Arguments are :

supported by established fact/experiences/logic/ prevailing notions of truth.

correct.

desirable (or harmful in case of negative argument).

properly related with the statement.

Weak Arguments are

ambiguous or confusing arguments.

too simple to be arguments.

goes against established facts.

does not get support from past experiences.

does not get support from logic and common sense.

assumption based arguments.

goes against prevailing notions of truth.

Three Arguments Based : Here, we are given three arguments and we have to study them, find which is/are true ?

Direction : The question given below consists of a statement, followed by three arguments numbered I, II and III. you have to decide which of the arguments is/are 'strong' argument (s) and which is/are 'weak' argument (s) and accordingly choose your answer from the alternatives given below the question ?

Statement : Should all the students graduating in any disciplines desirous of pursuing post-graduation in the subjects of their choice be allowed to enroll themselves in the post-graduate courses?

Arguments :

I. Yes, the students are the best judge of their capabilities and they should not be restricted from joining post-graduation courses.

II. No, the students need to study relevant subjects in graduate courses to enroll in post-graduate courses and the students must fulfil such conditions.

III. No, there are not enough institutes offering post-graduate courses which can accommodate all the graduates desirous of seeking post-graduation education of their own choice.

Solution (c) : The students cannot be enrolled in the courses just on the basis of their interests but their compatibility with the same also matters. So, Argument I does not hold. Besides, lack of institutions is no criteria to deny post-graduate Courses to students. Hence, Argument IIl does not hold. But Argument II holds as it is a genuine reason,

As we today mark UN Women’s Day, it is worth considering what the inequality between men and women costs South Asian countries and what can be done about it.

One big cost of inequality is that South Asian economies do not reach their full potential. In Bangladesh, for example, women account for most unpaid work, and are over represented in the low productivity informal sector and among the poor. Raising the female employment rate could contribute significantly to Bangladesh achieving its goal in 2021 of becoming a middle-income country. Yet even middle-income countries in South Asia could prosper from more women in the workforce. Women represent only 34 percent of the employed population in Sri Lanka, a figure that has remained static for decades.

Improvements in the education and health of women have been linked to better outcomes for their children in countries as varied as Nepal and Pakistan. In India, giving power to women at the local government level led to increases in public services, such as water and sanitation.

Just as the costs of inequality are huge, so is the challenge in overcoming it. The gaps in opportunity between men and women are the product of pervasive and stubborn social norms that privilege men’s and boys’ access to opportunities and resources over women’s and girls’.

In present times, women are being imparted education at par with the men and are capable of competing with them in all professions and fields. So, argument I holds. Also, women cannot be confined to the household and kept away from the challenges of the outside world against their will. They too have the right to be self - dependent. Besides, present - day women are well looking to outside jobs together with the household jobs. So, argument III holds while does not.

Hence the correct option is D.

A strike is a protest by people to make the state give in to their demands. It can also be to express their agreement or disagreement to a certain idea. In Japan, workers work overtime to show their resentment with the management. On the other hand, in India, they leave all the work and take on the streets to show their discontent. Strikes are used in extreme situations when no other form of negotiation with government work.

Strikes are a form of freedom of expression. But, the Constitution of India provides its citizens with freedom of speech, not freedom of a strike. Instead of solving people’s problems, the government uses gas bombs to disperse the crowd. Such protests have become very common in the country. We recently saw Bharat Bandh for the protest against caste-based reservation in jobs and education. They allow the grieving party to voice their opinions on judgment and decisions by the government which is not in their favor. But can all the decisions be in favor of every person?

Some discussions and rulings are welcome by a set of people and unfavorable for the other set. If there are a billion people in the country, there ought to be at least a million opinions. The government can not fulfill all the million wishes but can make sure each of the billion people gets a chance to fair living. By conducting strikes we are harming our own growth. Strikes slow down the economy, make the growth sluggish, scares away the possible foreign investors with instability.

Also,The production in factories stop, inventories pile up, the transportation sector comes to a halt, the stores are clogged, and the workers have no work to do. They lose on their daily wage which is their bread and butter. They are under threat of losing their jobs. The various resources assigned to take the country forward come to a standstill and lay waste.

Clearly, strike is not a means of indiscipline but only a practice in which the workers exercise their fundamental right to voice their protest against the atrocities of the management. So, argument I is vague while II holds. Also the option of resorting to strikes often aggravates petty issues and disrupts work for long periods, thus affecting productivity. So, III also holds strong.

Hence the correct option is C.
